Q&A Scene: Palmerslum

Tell us about your new single/album/tour?
We have just released a single called Mcadam, it’s a really punchy punk song that is about hating your job so much that you basically want to write yourself off, this song was recorded at Birdland studios and mixed by Lindsay Gravina and was was completed entirely within 2 takes! The single is of our new EP “BLOODHOUNDS” which is set to be released in June

What’s your favourite work at this point in time?
Defiantly our new EP- but if I had to pick a song from it it would have to be Bus stop but The whole experience of recording this was amazing and we especially loved working with Lindsay.

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote…
When we were filming the party scene for the Mcadam film clip there were a number of shots where I had to skull straight rum. Before we started shooting I suggested to Nathan (bass and also from Darwin) that we use prob booze like ice tea or something, he looks me dead in the eye and said “don’t be gamon brus” which is classic Darwin slang for “don’t be a shit c*%t” I thought, you know what, fuck it I have been watching mad men and I can handle my brown spirits, ill be fine! So I did it the first bottle skulling scene then Scott the director is like “Hey guys can we get that shot again?” so I did it again and was instructed to drink as much as I can, nek minit I woke up and it was the next day. The clip turned out great though!

What, or who, inspires you?
That’s a tough one, I don’t think there is one answer to that question, In one way playing music serves as a therapy: so you might have had a shitty stressful day and then you go into the rehearsal room and smash out a really intense song- I cant say that listening to other peoples music makes me want to do that, I guess playing is more of a necessity where you can escape and be totally free from this shit storm of a world we live in.

Which song do you wish you wrote?
Purple haze- Hendrix.

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
Tomato soup, mixed with vodka in a blender with the lid off on pulse setting in a room full of mangoes and green jelly.

What’s next for you?
We are writing for our debut album as we speak, but in the short term we had so much fun doing the Mcadam video clip that we are going to try and do some more!

What’s your scene?
Hanging out with my two besties Nathan and scott playing music.

About Palmerslum

Evolving from the warm primordial goo of the top end of Australia, three piece Melbourne punk/rock outfit Palmerslum combine their unique blend of alternative punk rock and melodic grooves to their newest sonic offering – their righteous and riotous EP Bloodhounds. Recorded at the famous Birdland Studios and mixed by the legendary Lindasy Gravina, Bloodhounds features cover art by in-demand illustrator/ comic artist Tim Molloy.

Palmerslum moved to Melbourne in 2015 and blast out bouncy heavy riffs that will make you mosh til you drop. The band have one running theme : The joys of growing up in the sweat pit that is Darwin and they channel that energy into their music.

Featuring Scott Stronarch on the drums and Nathan Edwards on the bass, the music all comes together with Chris Cleveland’s fat guitar sounds and melodic yet powerful vocals to form a unique sound that captures their punky Darwin vibe.

Since the release of their first EP in 2015 the band have been picking up momentum, going from strength to strength, getting tighter as a band and playing heaps of gigs around Melbourne. With their brand new super fresh EP Bloodhouds unleashed onto the world, plus a run of exciting shows booked to launch the EP, Palmerslum have a fun few months unfurling before them.

Originally from Darwin, both Chris and Nathan have been playing music together since 2005 but it wasn’t until they moved to Melbourne and formed Palmerslum in 2015 when they met Scott (originally from Newcastle) that it all really came together musically, and the band have been carving a niche on their new home turf. The band’s hard working atti- tude has led to many opportunities, accelerating progress, but what really makes Palmerslum tick is the total lack of limita- tions and the creative process associated with music.

Palmerslum live shows are entertaining, dynamic and high energy and it is little wonder they have been playing along- side some of Melbourne’s best bands including Don Fernan- do, Sherriff, Keggin, Animal Hands, Two Headed Dog, along with playing a sold out show at TV Eye with Swidgen and the infamous Peeping Tom plus more.

Palmerslum are one of those bands who continue to exceed expectations and they really enjoy constantly pushing the boundaries of contemporary punk rock. That tenacity coupled with a devil may care attitude plus an ongoing relationship with Lindsay Gravina harnessing their sound, they have just began to write an album. Their future is very bright indeed. But for now, take in their snotty brilliance via their new

EP Bloodhounds and stay tuned to your gig guides for launch gigs coming up in Melbourne and the Eastern seaboard.

So strap in….it only gets better from here….
