Tell us about your new single/album/tour?
For our new album we went into the studio and smashed out 13 songs in 12 hours and then I went to my local for celebratory Beveridge! Some of the songs we had been playing live for sometime but some of the songs were quite fresh, Most of the songs were put down in one or two takes. We only had minimal overdubs on the tracks, as we really wanted to create space in the songs and keep that raw live vibe of the band. Our new album is called Saturday Night Sunday Morning as the first half of the album has quite a rock feel, something you might listen to on a Saturday night for a party and the Second half has more a laid back country feel something that might be more suited to listening to on Sunday morning after a night on the town.
What’s your favourite work at this point in time?
Probably our latest album Saturday night Sunday Morning as most of the songs were put down in one or two takes. We only had minimal overdubs on the tracks, as we really wanted to create space in the songs and keep that raw live vibe, Its really nice to reach a point in our musical development where we can create such an album and been really comfortable and happy with the way it turned out
Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote…
Many years ago I played in a dodgy pub and plugged my amp into dodgy power point. When my lips touched the microphone I suddenly became the earth for the electricity and was blown a metre backwards through the air landed on my back right in front of the drum kit. It was a pretty shocking experience.
What, or who, inspires you?
Generally challenging life experiences inspire me to write although last year I bought a beautiful new electric guitar that has inspired me to write so many tunes. Getting out of town by myself also sometimes helps me with writing songs.
Which song do you wish you wrote?
Paul Kelly’s To Her Door is just simple yet brilliantly put together song and great story telling
How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
Rocky Road cause it’s a little rough around the edges but soft and sweet in the centre. I’m a sweet tooth so I can only think about chocolate references.

Gearing up for our album launch at The Spotted Mallard on 22nd July 2-5pm with special guests The Glorious North
What’s your scene?
Probably the live music scene. Love playing gigs or watching gigs as there are just so many wonderfully talented musos in Melbourne. Also like going to the footy.

Michael Meeking & The Lost Souls launch their brand new album Saturday Night Sunday Morning at The Spotted Mallard on Saturday 22nd July in an afternoon gig kicking off at 2pm with special guests The Glorious North. Saturday Night Sunday Morning is the finest album in a music career that has taken Michael from Melbourne to London and back again. After six years in London, Michael returned home and re-formed The Lost Souls (Julien Chick on bass, Chris Gates on guitar, and Dave Kleynjans on drums, Cate De Carteret and Maryanne Smart on backing vocals). They’re joined on the album by some special guests, including Shane Reilly (Lost Ragas) on pedal steel, and Steve Hesketh (The Drones, Jet, You Am I) on piano, while Alison Ferrier and Michael trade lines of lament in ‘Please Don’t Cry For Me’, a heartbreaking tale of sorrow and regret. “Lovin’ ain’t my best game,” Michael confesses. “Always seems to end in pain.”
