Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?
My new single ‘Nobody Knows’ is about the breakdown of a relationship and the feeling of something coming to a sudden and definite end without any explanation. I used the premise of a romantic break up to express myself about a different kind of relationship breakdown from within my own life. So in that way it was cathartic to be able to express myself and get things off my chest but also being able to disguise it as something that its not.
How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
It’s hard to describe my sound in food form because my sound is still evolving and changing. At first I was thinking chocolate soufflé…but now I’m thinking it’s more like…mango on toast? …yeah its definitely mango on toast.
Which of your songs resonate most strongly and why?
I think ‘The Greater You’, a song from my first EP resonates strongly because it’s a soulful track about being the best version of your self, which is something I think a lot of people are trying to be.
Tell us a quick, on the road, anecdote
Whenever I’m on the road gigging I ALWAYS get asked if I’m related to Larry Corowa. He’s a Rugby League player who played for Balmain Tigers and represented Australia in the 70’s and 80’s. He’s known for his lightning speed and was nicknamed the Black Flash. I’ve been shouted a lot of free beers thanks to Larry, people are always so excited to find out that we’re related, but disappointed that I can’t run as fast as him.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from my environment and everything around me. I really like to song write when I’m traveling and visiting new places, especially places overseas that are so different from my norm.
Which song do you wish you wrote?
First up, I have to say that this is such a hard question! There are so many incredible songs out there…but I wish that I wrote Treasure by Bruno Mars or Love on Top by Beyonce. Both of those songs are really fun and catchy, with an old school groove vibe. I’ve been wanting to write a song in that style for ages but I haven’t quite written the perfect one yet…I’ll get back to you when I do ;)
What’s next for you?
I am heading to the UK and Europe for the next 2 months on a working holiday. I’ll be overseas for Christmas and New Years so fingers crossed I’ll get to experience a White Christmas! When I get home I’ll be going straight back to work on“The Rabbits”, which is a new Australia musical/opera, composed by Kate Miller-Heidke. The show is on during Sydney Festival from January 14th – 24th. I also have a new EP coming out in early 2016 and I’m planning a tour as well.
What’s your scene?
A lot of my friends are in the performing arts and we are always traveling and touring at different times so its hard to catch up. But on those rare occasions when we are all in town I like to catch up with friends over a late brunch. My favourite spot at the moment is Store Espresso in Camperdown. They give you picnic blankets and you can eat your food out on the grass of Camperdown Oval in the sunshine, its super chilled and perfect for a lazy weekend catching up with good friends.
About Marcus Corowa
Marcus Corowa burst onto the Australian music landscape in 2012 with the release of his debut EP The Greater You, which won him a Deadly Award for Most Promising New Talent. Growing up in Bowen in Queensland, his earliest memories are playing guitar and eating mangoes. He moved to Brisbane as a teenager and got a job at Australia Post when he finished school. However, music was always in his blood, so it wasn’t long before he swapped stamps for amps and began pursuing his music career in 2009.
Since then he has performed at some major festivals including Sydney Festival, Yabun Festival and FUSE. He has also supported some of the industry’s biggest starts, including Christine Anu, Marcia Hines, Toni Childs and James Reyne to name a few. He is in the process of recording his second EP, produced by Damien Leith, due for release in early 2016. Nobody Knows is the first single from the forthcoming EP and an apt demonstration of what music lovers can expect from this stellar musician. Drawing on his Aboriginal and South Sea Islander roots, Marcus has a musical style that is diverse and evolving, and is perfectly reflected in the single release. The combination of blues, jazz, funk, soul and pop elements came together with edgy and strong beats, and delicate piano accompaniment to create a gem of a track.
