Q&A Scene: KAT O

Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?

[pullquote]What’s next for you? My single launch February 13 and after that I’ll probably have to stack the dishwasher again.[/pullquote] My single is called Vegemite and Tea. I wrote it when I put the capo on the 7th fret of my acoustic just to see what would happen. It’s about lost love seen through an empty Vegemite jar.

kat-oHow would you describe your sound in food form and why?

It’s kinda like a potato chip sandwich with soft white bread because it’s crunchy and soft at the same time
Which of your songs resonate most strongly and why?
A song called Lost Opportunities which is about living in the now and doing more with your life than just sitting on the couch watching other people do stuff. Every time I sing the lyrics, ‘This very moment’ I am in that moment, every time, it’s like I go into a trance and am in that moment, it’s kinda spiritual I guess.
Tell us a quick, on the road, anecdote.
When my old band toured NYC we stayed at our Manager’s house in her Harry Potter room.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Lately it’s been my daughter. She is almost 3 and I’m learning a lot from her. I’d love to see the world through her eyes. Kids are just pure joy and they live in the moment! Like dogs do. They say 2 year olds and dogs have the same IQ so for this moment in time my kid and my dog had the same brain capacity. It blew my mind haha.
Which song do you wish you wrote?
Kiss Me Deadly by Generation X
What’s next for you?
My single launch February 13 and after that I’ll probably have to stack the dishwasher again.
What’s your scene?
Music, writing, art, animals, nature.

Vegemite And Tea is a solo project for vegetarian/activist Kat and the mastering was financed through her $50 donation to mastering genius Jack The Bear’s Foundation charity drive. Kat says, “I wanted to do something with it and I really like how it sounds after mastering. It doesn’t quite fit in with any of my other projects, so I thought it would be fun to put it out there on its own and see how it stands up.”

The story so far: KAT O has been gigging around Melbourne and beyond in many guises, most famously with Kathematics, who toured NYC in 2008. She is currently playing in punk/grunge band Kill TV and playing bass in a rock/grunge band called Purroxide, in addition to co-mumming her daughter and working on her never ending debut Novel which she recently finished. Her various bands have supported Sleater Kinney, Killing Heidi, Deborah Conway, Vika and Linda, Clare Bowditch, Stonefield, The Spazzys and Ouch My Face.
