Tell us about your new tour?
In Oakliegh Tonight at the Caravan Music Club. IOT will be like a TV tonight show except it won’t be on TV. It’ll be live at the Oakleigh RSL on the first Thursday of every month. I will host it. There’ll be a house band, new guests each month, interviews, dancing, poetry, prizes, local traders, the wheel. What more do you want?
What’s your favourite work at this point in time?
When you’re creating a variety show you can’t have favourites. There is too much choice and too much of it is too good.
Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.
The cast of IOT haven’t been in the studio or on the road. We’ve only had meetings on the pub.
What, or who, inspires you?
Mary Hardy, Mike Williamson, Ted Hamilton, Vi Greenhalf, Ugly Dave Gray. Australian entertainment pioneers.
Which song do you wish you wrote?
AC/DC’s TNT because it’s the tune we are borrowing for In Oakleigh Tonight’s theme song. IOT oi, oi, oi.
How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
A smorgasbord. So much variety and an unlimited supply.
What’s next for you?
It would be television but TV is dying a horrible slow death so it may have to be more live tonight shows in other places. In Warracknabeal Tonight?
What’s your scene?
The Oakleigh variety cabaret scene.
Jon von Goes has presented the JVG Radio Method on Sundays afternoons on RRR for longer than he cares to remember. But the show is yet to peak.
He is a musician. He has his own band the JVG Guitar Method and can be seen playing around town with the Large Number Twelves.
He has curated a collection of big production number shows. Amongst them RRR’s annual BBQ Day, the Caravan Music Club’s Stopping All Stations Except East Richmond and Grand Final Eve Pie Night extravaganzas, and the City of Yarra’s Brown River.
He is Melbourne’s premier civil celebrant. Mainly weddings but has been known to bury them too.
And he has played more games for the RRR/PBS Megahertz than anybody else.
In Oakleigh Tonight with JVG
The Caravan’s very own tonight show will premiere on Thursday June 1st and will run on the first Thursday of every month from then on in. You ask whatever happened to variety entertainment? It’s back.
Be there on June 1st for the gala opening when your host RRR’s Jon von Goes and the IOT house band will be joined by guests ANGIE HART (Frente) and PAULIE STEWART (Painters & Dockers)
lt’ll be like being at home watching telly when there were 4 channels and everything was live. Singing, dancing, interviews, a desk, a couch, a house band, a house poet, a barrel, a wheel, prizes, mall talk, local legends, big names, small names, dinner, show. All in the comfort of the caravan music club where drinks are still reasonably inexpensive.
Entertainment with the largest upper case E you’ve ever seen.
