Q&A Scene: Joey Simon & Yehudi Saling of The Sand Dollars

Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?

Although it may not seem like it, Silence Is Gold is a love song. It belongs to a backwards universe where Tarantino directed Love Actually, starring Serge Gainsbourg as the villain and everyone blew up after they kissed. If you think you’re ready for that universe, then this song is for you. Our tour will take us to Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, and the magical Hobart.

What’s your favourite work at this point in time?

We have an upcoming EP, and we have also begun writing for the next piece of work after that. Some of the songs we are currently writing are really coming together and are a lot of fun to play. The Sand Dollars’ sound is continually developing, its really exciting to have our favourite work in front of us.

How would you describe your sound in food form?

Cheeky Nandos.

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.

We left Melbourne in the early morning to drive up to Sydney for a show. We left at 6am, at 6:05am Baini had already told us that “My Dad invented the long macchiato”. It was a long car ride.

What, or who, inspires you?

People dancing at our shows. Owen Wilson. The Beatles. Making our family back home in the village proud.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

Superstar by Jamelia. What an absolute masterpiece.

What’s next for you?

Releasing our EP, more shows, more writing, more good times.

What’s your scene?

Road trips and hummus dip.

After the success of 2015 singles Sour Face’ ‘Holster’ Melbourne four piece THE SAND DOLLARS have kicked off 2016 with a bang!

Playing along side stellar Aussie acts Alex Lahey, Kingswood, Jeremy Neale, Architecture in Helsinki and even performing at the iconic MCG’s ‘Sleep At The G’ charity event supporting the homeless community and a slew of local shows. Not ones to shy away from hard yakka the Melbourne rockers have been simultaneously recording their debut EP due out later this year.

‘SILENCE IS GOLD’ is the first single to drop and the 2.38 minute masterpiece is a testamant to the young bands unrivaled dedication to carving a new untravelled path with their distinctive sound and their undeniable songwriting prowess. The combination of indie rock, meets western meets Tarantino Vs Turner is sheer catchy genius.

The band have teamed with film producers We Made That to bring us Part 1 of a 5 part epic journey. The story follows four young middle class teens on an adventurous night after school as they hit the town whilst getting up to their usual rebellious antics. The adventure turns sour upon the discovery of a dead body and the kidnapping of their friend Kevin. Following the four teens into an abandoned warehouse the video reflects the raw emotion and upfront lyrics of the track. Stay tuned for Part 2.
