Q&A Scene: Dave ‘Red’ Whip ~ Redro Redriguez & His Inner Demons

Tell us about the event at the Cherry Bar next Friday.

Well I’ve had some health dramas lately. I’ve had a bit of cancer, and I’d gotten to the point where I couldn’t afford the time I needed to rest and heal, I couldn’t afford the supplements I needed to keep my body healthy, and I couldn’t afford the good organic food that we all need to keep our bodies healthy. So I had to put my hand up and ask for help. My friend Patrick Donovan put together a gofundme that has been going very well. And my friend James Young put together a gig at Cherry Bar to help raise funds also. As a cherry on top, I also get to play the show.

What’s your favourite work at this point in time?

I am very proud of our second album, called Denim Daddy.

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.

Neil Wilkinson is an incredible guitar player that in a studio situation can do whatever you ask and nail it in a couple of takes.

What, or who, inspires you?

I am inspired my band, The Inner Demons. I want to always be good enough to deserve a band as good as them. So they inspire me to do better. Hunter S Thompson, at this particular point in history is a big inspiration also.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

“On Your Shoulder” by Watty Thompson

What’s next for you?

After this gig, The band and I will start working on new songs for a full blown album.

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?

Hearty Mexican barbecue. It’s spicy, home cooked, nutritious, and filling.

What’s your scene?

It’s a sunny day with a clear blue sky, there are sounds of birds tweeting. It’s about 23 degrees, and the doors of my home studio are wide open, and letting in a gentle breeze. I am sitting at my desk with my feet up, listening to something amazing.

Perhaps you know Dave “Red, Redro, Redriguez” Whip? Singer, Guitar player, songwriter, and a live sound engineer that mixed 5000 bands at Cherry from 2009 to 2017.

A recording engineer, and producer that recorded, and mixed records for Stiff Richards, Spawn, Watty Thompson and many others! And you may have stood shoulder to shoulder with him at one of many shows he has attended in over 30 years of gigs.

Well the poor guy got diagnosed with cancer in March 2021 and has been working on getting rid of it ever since. Even though Red has been aided by our governments benevolent health system, he has been struggling with fatigue, and medications, and has had to lower his workload. Red also needs the help of natural therapies which medicare won’t pay for, and are also rather expensive.

This man that has contributed all he can to Melbourne music needs financial assistance to keep a roof over his head and to get healthy once again so that he can keep mixing, creating, and serving the artists, and punters of the great Port Phillip Bay music scene.
