Q&A Scene: Ben Panucci – New Venusians

Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?
We have just released our debut album and going on a little tour to promote it. We’re playing in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Wollongong at this point, with some other dates soon to announce.

The album is a reflection of the band’s love of lush synth sounds, gritty guitar playing and jazz inflected vocal stylings.

What’s your favourite work at this point in time?
I’m sure everyone in the group would have a different answer to this, and if they are like me, it would probably change constantly anyway. From the album, I’d say I enjoy T.S I Love You the most, as it’s really fun to play live.

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.
Christian Hemara, one of the lead singers, who is extremely energetic on stage and has been known to writhe around on the ground in excitement…actually spends most of his time sleeping when in the studio, even if we are tracking live drums.

What, or who, inspires you?
I’m inspired my a multitude of things, but probably a big one is seeing somebody strive towards their own artistic vision. I think creativity is something that has the ability to define us all and provide colour and shape to our own journey, as well as to those around us.

Which song do you wish you wrote?
Haha there are a lot of these I guess.. One that always moves me is ‘Poses’ by Rufus Wainwright

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
I would hope that it is something that pertains to density and crispness while also being light and subtle…. Hmmm so maybe like a well charred woodfire pizza or Paella.

Actually… I just asked a friend and they said Champagne Custard! Not sure if that’s a thing but it sounds like it could be great!

What’s next for you?
Hopefully more opportunities to take our show on the road and also a chance to get cracking at our next album. The more opportunities we can make to play music the better.

What’s your scene?
I guess my friends/colleagues that I hang out with. All of whom I have the upmost respect for as musicians and friends.  All are very passionate about music, art, good food and….. drinking.

About New Venusians

Sydney outfit New Venusians release latest track ‘Game Change’ from forthcoming debut album and tour nationally

Sydney neo-soul and hip hop blenders New Venusians have lifted their latest track ‘Game Change’ off of forthcoming self-titled debut album dropping March 24, as well as announce a National tour in support of the release. The fresh synth-soaked number follows in the wake of their successful January release ‘Get Along’ which has been playlisted on Double Jand clocked up a number of spins on, Triple J Unearthed, Triple J’s Roots n All, Triple R, FBI and East Side radio programs to name a few.

A slow builder, ‘Game Change’ sees the seven-piece taking a few twists and turns, with opening soul-fueled minimalist grooves paving the way for a midway guitar-induced break that builds to a crescendo of synths and percussion. Layered with dreamy vocal hooks and an undeniably funky bass-line that buoys the song along, ‘Game Change’ slowly shifts pace and builds in texture and dynamics, speaking both lyrically and musically of the importance of honesty and the willingness to accept and adapt to change.

Having already attracted the interest of fans both at home and abroad, New Venusians are going from strength to strength gaining massive exposure with recent inclusions in Spotify’s ‘Fresh Finds’ Playlist, Apple Music’s ‘The New Wave of Indie RnB’ Playlist, and theBandcamp Weekly Show, New Venusian’s are ready to take their highly anticipated debut album on the road this April, playing some of Australia’s capital cities on a not-to-be-missed east coast tour.

New Venusians are made up of some of Australia’s most sought after musical talent, and as session musicians, many of the members work with some of Australia’s leading contemporary artists including Ngaiire, Sampa The Great, and Urthboy just to name a few.
