Q&A Scene: Beautiful Beasts

Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?
We’re putting out a double single called ‘Pony Ride/The 90’s’, which is a pair of soul-infused pop numbers that we’ve been working on for a while now. ‘Pony Ride’ is more of a deep groove, taken a lot of inspiration from classic 70’s funk, whilst ‘the 90’s’ is a more tender groove, definitely a nostalgic slow jam. You can check out the first track ‘Pony Ride’ here https://soundcloud.com/beautifulbeasts/pony-ride. We’re touring this release in Melbourne, Mildura, Adelaide, Canberra and Sydney and can’t wait to show play these songs and more live with our seven-piece band!
How would you describe your sound in food form and why?

[pullquote]We’re touring this release in Melbourne, Mildura, Adelaide, Canberra and Sydney and can’t wait to show play these songs and more live with our seven-piece band![/pullquote] I like to think of our music as like a spicy rice and bean burrito; warm, tasty, packs a punch, unafraid of getting messy, and full of protein.

Which of your songs resonate most strongly and why?

People seems to react best to our most catchy and upbeat songs, such as our last single ‘Papaya (Room to Move)’. Most people just want to hear music that agrees with their ears and makes them want to move their body, and ‘Papaya’ is probably the song that gets people dancing the most; it’s such a simple song with such a great groove!

Tell us a quick, on the road, anecdote.

We made a point to stop for a frisbee throwing session whilst driving to the different cities on last tour, and with all the intensity of touring, it was so nice to take a break from it every so often and just throw a frisbee.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

We draw inspiration from everything around us, but when it comes to crafting grooves and hooks we take a lot of inspiration from early 2000’s RnB and hip hop, as well as classic 70’s funk. We all listen to heaps of music; soul, hip hop, electronic, funk, jazz, and invariably all those influences come through in the music we create.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

I wish I had written ‘Hotline Bling’ by Drake. Such a unique hook with amazing production that sounds so different to what’s out on the radio now. It’s really one of the few songs that I would say ticks all the boxes to be considered a perfect pop song.
What’s next for you?
After the tour’s done we’ll be getting stuck into writing and recording our next EP. We’ve got a few songs that we really like and will be trying out live on this upcoming tour, and we want to get them and some more songs really up to the standard where we’ll be happy recording and releasing them. What’s your scene?

Anywhere that welcomes fun, soulful music that doesn’t take itself too seriously. A dance floor filled with your best friends.
