Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?
We are finishing the tour for the “Picture This “album that started in October last year.
The album is an acoustic reworking of our best known songs plus one new song “travellers tales”and a Bruce Springsteen cover “born to run”.we are trying like mad to get time and finances together to record some new (ta dah ….let the trumpets sound) material. I am also doing some solo shows around Sydney playing non – Pictures songs, all in all it is a very busy and creative time for us all!
I have to travel out from the UK and the guys have to gather from around the country so it can be a bit of a logistic nightmare.
What’s your favourite work at this point in time?
[pullquote]What, or who, inspires you?
My wife! Her art,her dedication and knowledge of her art are paramount, and yet she is the most amazing mother, wife, confidant and friend![/pullquote] I’m not sure….I think my favourite work is always our live work or in the case of recording
The next one! I’m not a very easily satisfied person, and have always been very harsh on myself. That old maxim about the sound in your head and what comes out of the speakers not matching up has always rung true with me! Charlie Cole keeps me inspired, he is such a walking conundrum!
Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.
Most of them are either too boring, too ribald, too libellous or stupid to relate in print!
No name! No pack drill!!
What, or who, inspires you?
My wife! Her art, her dedication and knowledge of her art are paramount, and yet she is the most amazing mother, wife, confidant and friend! I would not be here without her and I most certainly would not still be making music. She is the reason my sun rises and sets every day and the breath in my body,
Which song do you wish you wrote?
Love minus Zero / no limit.
How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
Home cooking, I am not a complex person
What’s next for you?
Right now? Bed! Over the next year? We are moving to Italy!
What’s your scene?
I hate scenes!!!!
About Moving Pictures
Moving Pictures formed in 1978. Their debut album, Days of Innocence, was issued in October 1981 and eventually peaked at No. 1 on the Kent Music Report Albums Chart in February the following year. In January 1982 they released their single, “What About Me”, which reached No. 1 on the related Kent Music Report Singles Chart. Late that year Elektra Records issued Days of Innocence and “What About Me” in North America. The single reached No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 and appeared on the associated year-end Hot 100 list for 1983.
In November 1982 another single, “Winners”, peaked at No. 12 in Australia. In October 1983 their second album, Matinee, was released. It reached No. 16 and, of its four singles, only the lead single, “Back to the Streets”, reached the Top 40. Their non-album single, “Never”, was used for two film soundtracks, Footloose (1984) and Hot Rod (2007).
2015 saw the release of ‘Picture This’, a stripped back album featuring re-interpretations of past songs.
The Summer of 2015/ 2016 saw the band embark on a 32 date National Tour with James Reyne.
The classic Moving Pictures line up of Alex Smith, Andy Thompson, Charlie Cole, Ian Lees, Mark Meyer and Garry Frost are back together again and coming to MEMO Music Hall for their Only Melbourne Show.
