Q&A Scene: Steph Strings

Tell us about your new album, Feel Alive?

This is my debut album, twelve songs that go through twelve emotions and leave you feeling truly alive! Lots of the songs feel very ‘live’ and untouched. There’s also a real breath of fresh air with this record, as I’ve taken some big leaps into the unknown. Some of the wild cards include piano instrumentals, rock songs and even ballads like Melbourne Blue. This is an album I’ll look back on with immense pride for the rest of my life.

What’s your favourite work at this point in time? (your own work)

I really love my two newest releases ‘Melbourne Blue’ and ‘Devil Woman’. It’s my best work to date and I actually really enjoy listening to them!

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?

My sound as a food would be a beef brisket nourish bowl. I think it’s hearty and powerful but has lots of lightness and goodness around it. Wholesome food!

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.

In highschool my favourite musician was Ziggy Alberts! At 18, I went to Schoolies in Byron Bay and happened to run into him whilst on my way to the bottle-o. We had a little chat, exchanged music and then I went back to my friends to tell them ‘I JUST MET ZIGGY ALBERTS’. They didn’t believe me! 5 years later, he remembered me and asked me to tour Europe and North America with him. Sliding door moment!

What, or who, inspires you?

Joni Mitchell is a huge inspiration, mainly because she’s the most successful female folk artist in the world. My music draws inspiration from blues and roots artists such as John Butler and Xavier Rudd as well as fingerstyle artists like Jose Gonzalez and Ben Howard.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

Old Man by Neil Young

What’s next for you?

I’m touring North America in March then Europe in April! It’s going to be the biggest year of my life, I can already feel it….

What’s your scene?

You’ll find me most weekdays on the coastline, taking it pretty easy. I’m also really into the cafe/library scene and long chats over cups of English Breakfast Tea. However, on the weekend I do a full 180 – I love being in the city and jumping from restaurants to wine bars to pubs, running into people and making the most of any music I can find!
