Under the Yarra Valley Sun: Crowded House and the Sound of Nostalgia

What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than beneath the warm Australian sun, glass in hand, surrounded by the vines of the Yarra Valley and the sound of home-grown music?

The day’s lineup was an impressive showcase of Australian talent. Jae Laffer opened proceedings, followed by Mark Seymour with Vika & Linda, The Waifs, and The Church — icons of the ’80s who delivered a string of crowd favourites, including Metropolis, Almost With You, The Unguarded Moment and, of course, Under the Milky Way.

Angus & Julia Stone followed with a set that was both understated and magnetic. Julia’s delicate, almost child-like vocals — evocative of Norah Jones — carried across the amphitheatre, while Angus’ mellow, soulful tone grounded each song. Together, they struck the perfect balance, setting the mood for the evening’s headliners, Crowded House.

As the sun dipped below the vines, the 10,000-strong crowd was transported through the decades. There was a collective sense of familiarity — that comforting blend of anticipation and nostalgia — as Neil Finn and company reminded everyone why their music continues to endure.

The setlist spanned eras and generations. Highlights included Seven Worlds Collide (World Where You Live, 1986 / 7 Worlds Collide projects 2001 & 2009), To the Island (Dreamers Are Waiting, 2021), World Where You Live (Crowded House, 1986), Weather With You (Woodface, 1991 / single 1992), When You Come (Temple of Low Men, 1988), Private Universe (Together Alone, 1993), and Better Be Home Soon (Temple of Low Men, 1988).

A warm night, great music, wine, and a relaxed crowd — what more could you ask for?
