Since I’ve only experienced Crywank’s music through their recorded albums, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a live performance. However, they far exceeded my expectations. Seeing them live was deeply moving -though the performance had a raw, unpolished quality, it was full of heart.
The venue was relatively small—it can hold up to 800 people—but thankfully, the crowd wasn’t too overwhelming.
Crywank played many of their best-known songs in a thoughtfully curated setlist for their farewell tour, which felt bittersweet. Naturally, the song choices reflected their signature style. Their lyrics, deeply personal and honest about mental health, create an intimate connection with listeners—almost as if the music takes you by the hand and reassures you, you are not alone. The crowd enthusiastically sang along, especially during the cathartic screaming chorus of Privately Owned Spiral Galaxy.
The stage setup was minimal, staying true to their DIY roots; their instruments reinforcing the idea that aspiring musicians don’t need expensive gear to create meaningful art. Lead vocalist and guitarist, James Clayton mentioned that their setup is deliberately simple—they can just plug in and play. They also encouraged anyone in the audience dreaming of starting a band to go for it, reminding them that Crywank themselves started with humble beginnings.
It was a standout moment.
Each band member had their time to shine with solo performances. Drummer, Dan Watson even played a song about toast, which I’m still thinking about.
As this was Crywank’s final tour in Australia, I feel truly honoured to have experienced their music live.
