Q&A Scene: Jack Panther

Tell us about your new EP when i’m feeling better we could dream together?

This EP has been in the works for an incredibly long time for me. It’s been a documented journey of some really important moments of my life over the past 3.5 years. when i’m feeling better we could dream together is a story of hope and finding it in times where I thought I cannot.

What’s your favourite work at this point in time? (your own work)

Breathe is a big stand out for me – the lyrics, the production, the writing. Although I’m ALWAYS excited about what I’m working on next (shhh – I can’t tell but it will reveal itself).

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?

It’s like a tiny bit of citrus and buttery, perhaps like a lemon pie. It’s indulgent but in the right context can be the most exciting food and pallet cleansing food you’ve had in a while. Well that’s what I am for at least.

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.

I remember during my last tour, we played a show in Wellington, where I studied and lived for 6 years. We had just performed one of my tracks, ‘comedown :/’ live and I didn’t realise but some crazy effects were still on my vocals after the song had finished and I had started talking. A lot of friends were in the audience and everyone erupted into laughter. It was hilarious because the effects were so crazy. Afterwards a friend came up to me and was like ‘Hey, I loved your bit’ and I was like ‘OH – ha.. Yes, a BIT’. It was hilarious everyone thought the technical error was a comedic choice hahaha but I’ll take it!

What, or who, inspires you?

Growing up I listened to a mix of Top 40 Pop, Pop Ballads & 80s Pop (my Mum’s music), and then Progressive Rock and lots of Melancholic Pop / Alt (my Dad). Now as a musician, I can really see how the mix of both has influenced my writing to my taste.

When I was a teenager, I listened to a lot of Arctic Monkeys, Lana Del Rey, and Sky Ferreira.

More so these days I listen to Clairo, beabadoobee, and HAIM.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

Lana Del Rey’s Mariners Apartment Complex. I genuinely think that’s like a song which is perfectly written, produced and mixed. Every time I hear it, I get shivers.

What’s next for you?

Heading on Tour, playing shows in London, Auckland and Melbourne! Come say hi. Then I’ll be back in the studio come June!

What’s your scene?

My musical scene is alt-pop, indie pop. Personal life, perhaps a bit of rave vibes too. I think there’s so many wonderful scenes in London and I’m still getting to know them all.
