Snap Scene: Teachers walk off for #KidsOffAllOff – Teachers for Refugees and Kids Off Nauru – State Library of Victoria – Tuesday 20th November

Scott Morrison’s suggestion that all children will come off Nauru by the end of December is a victory for the campaign. But he’s already back tracking on it. We need to ensure all refugees on Manus and Nauru are resettled in our communities, and not in onshore camps.

Contingents of teachers from schools across Melbourne took the afternoon off work on the 20th of November, Universal Children’s Day, and assembled at the State Library.

We demand the government bring all the kids and adults Australia has sent to Nauru and Manus Island to Australia for permanent resettlement.

There are still 17 children on Nauru, and hundreds of adults imprisoned in offshore detention. The mental health crisis is catastrophic- children are in catatonic states, and adults are suicidal. Men are regularly beaten on Manus. There is no health care, education or future for refugees on Nauru or Manus.

Despite this crisis, the Morrison government is refusing to close the camps. Labor is urging the government not to obstruct doctors transferring sick kids Nauru, but no one can live a safe or healthy life in offshore prison; we need Labor to join the call to “Bring Them Here”.
