With New Orleans swagger, a large cup of soul, a spoonful of blues, and a dash of jazz noir, Steve Boyd’s Rum Reverie hoots and hollers with all its might. Imagine Tom Waits meeting Hound Dog Taylor in Bourbon St, New Orleans and you’re getting close. The sound is heartfelt and raw, the influences primal and instinctive; perhaps not schooled, and certainly not slick. Conceived over many nights of shared musings, quaffing of wine, and listening to old vinyl records, the Rum Reverie is the brainchild of life-long friends and former Steve Boyd & The Preachers band mates Paul Fiddes on drums, and Steve Boyd on lead vocals and guitar – augmented by upright bass, brass, and Hammond organ.
Debut EP Healers and Howlers was a finalist in The Age Music Victoria Music Awards ‘Best Blues Album’ category in 2016, and the band are set to release their full length follow-up in 2017 following performances at Blues at The Briars Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival, and at Melbourne’s iconic Cherry Bar. With a punk brain, a gospel soul, a blues heart, and hints of jazz coursing through its veins, Steve Boyd’s Rum Reverie promises to hoot, holler, growl and grind with all its might.
