A few images of the first evening at Womadelaide, which was a spectacular of colour, feathers and varied music over 7 stages. The record number of crowds certainly made it a challenge to get excellent positions within the crowd and one had to set up early to get the best views for any performance.
Personal highlight was political songwriter, Billy Bragg who engaged the crowd and promoted several causes, in particular the need for solidarity to support the Transgender members of our community. Melbourne Blues-Rock singer, Grace Cummings, who is influenced by 20th century poets such as Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and Brett Whitely performed a spellbinding powerful set on Womad’s Zoo stage. One of the larger performances was by US Wisconsin outfit, Bon Iver. Some describe the sound as dreamy, folk rock. It was a performance that resonated with the under 30 year old demographic. Bring on day 2!
