Snap Scene: Melbourne’s Laneways – Rankins Lane by Josh Stanyer

Rankins Lane, located on Little Bourke Street, is one of Melbourne’s little-known treasures. Surrounded by old brick buildings, Rankins Lane has retained much of its original charm since it’s opening in 1895. Originally famous for its jewelry industry in the early to mid-1900’s, many of the buildings around the lane have since been converted into shops and apartments.

Mirka Mora, the famous contemporary artist who played a significant role in the development of the Australian contemporary art scene, lived in Rankins Lane after moving to Australia in 1951, giving the Lane it’s artistic reputation.

Today, the lane is a somewhat quiet place, sitting in the shadow of some of Melbourne’s largest skyscrapers. Many businesses operate in the lane, including the Manchester Press Café, serving choice coffee, as well as a tattoo shop and hair salon.
