Hardware lane, situated in the heart of Melbourne, is famed for its many dining opportunities and European style. Originally called Wrights Lane, it was home to some of Melbourne’s earliest hotels, such as the Shamrock Hotel and Kirks Bazaar Hotel as early as 1866, today neither hotel remains. The laneway has changed significantly since, and was subdivided into two laneways in 1925, and renamed in 1927 to Hardware Lane.
Between 1930 and 2000, the hotels and bazaars were replaced by fine dining restaurants, but unlike many other laneways in Melbourne, Hardware Lane retains its cobbled streets and European style, helping it stand out amongst the many laneways in the city.
Today, Hardware Lane hosts a great variety of stores and restaurants, from some of Melbourne’s most talented tattoo artists, to Mexican, Vietnamese, and Italian cuisine, and even Wine bars, Hardware Lane has it all.
