The 2015 Reclink Community Cup was won Sunday at Elsternwick Park by Triple R 102.7FM / PBS 106.7FM Megahertz in the traditional clash between community broadcasters and musicians. Drawing a massive crowd it was a great testament to Melbourne’s love of the grass roots community event and an apt celebration of it’s twenty first anniversary year. With the official attendance seeing over 10,000 punters pile through the gate, it lived up to the day’s theme Feelin’ Kinda Sporty.
Reclink Community Cup is an annual charity football match traditionally held between the Triple R / PBS FM Megahertz and the Rockdogs, comprised of Melbourne’s rock royalty, with the goal of raising money for charity for Recllink Australia and providing punters with a fantastic day out.
With excellent June weather of unseasonably sunny skies, the much loved annual footy match raised much needed cash to help Reclink Australia deliver sports and arts programs to assist disadvantaged folks nationwide. Families, music fans, half-time kick-to-kick, and theatrics galore including two skydivers who delivered the ball pre coin-toss to Anthony Albanese MP to kick the game off, made for a very colourful day.
With passionate but at times skills-challenged football best described as “free-range” as the centrepiece, it’s safe to say entertainment was the winner of the day.
From the get go Megahertz dominated the game, and the final scoreboard result reflected that with Megahertz : 9.10.64 vs The Rockdogs : 5.7.37. Alex Casablancas from Meghertz, won the Stephen Connelly Award (Best On Ground).
Kicking off the days’ entertainment just after gates opened was Ally Spazzy’s Kiddyrock & The Cool Bananas with loads of children enjoying their performance. Local acts Pearls and Adalita followed, and then hitting stage at half time was The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra. Post match saw Graveyard Train perform a blistering live set as always.
The crowd was also entertained by the much loved legendary Paul Kelly who has a long association with the event as former Rockdogs Coach, alongside his nephew Dan Kelly to perform their take on the Dave Graney & The Coral Snakes song Feelin’ Kinda Sporty, which was the day’s theme.
Reclink Australia, Triple R 102.7FM and PBS 106.7FM acknowledges the support of the 2015 Reclink Community Cup partners: James Boags Draught, Bayside City Council and Victorian Amateur Football Association.
