Scene News: The Butterfly Club announces largest ever program as part of the 2015 Melbourne Fringe Festival

The Butterfly Club have a proud 16-year history of presenting independent cabaret, theatre, music, comedy and burlesque. For this year’s Melbourne Fringe Festival they have rolled out their most ambitious and exciting program to date. Over the three weeks of the festival, they will play host to 22 productions, totalling 126 individual performances. Crazy? Probably. Logistical nightmare? Definitely. Brilliant? Absolutely.

Last week saw the program launch for the 2015 Melbourne Fringe Festival. With 401 productions, it is set to be the largest incarnation of the festival yet. The Butterfly Club have risen to the occasion, with 22 of these shows finding a home on the Club’s stage.

“Anyone familiar with the Club will know that our regular programming is very much a weekly mini-arts-festival. We routinely present somewhere between 5 and 20 shows each week,” says Simone Pulga, Director of The Butterfly Club. “For this year’s Fringe program we fielded our highest ever number of applications. So we said ‘yes’ to as many as we could, we took a deep breath, and then went about meeting with all 22 producers to prepare for the logistics of presenting, publicising and supporting a program with 8 shows every night. We are incredibly proud of the result – and tickets are already flying out the door, with some performances close to sold out already.”

Some key highlights from the program include the long-awaited return of The Candy Topps in Femme Fatale, The Impromptunes’ Puppets! The Musical, Ruth Wilkin in Tribute and Becky Lou’s production of Seen & Heard. The Butterfly Club will also play host to a rare Monday show, in which the cast of The Big HOO-HAA are taking over the entire venue to present Melbourne’s Very Haunted House, with roaming characters jumping out of every squeaky door and every nook used as a performance space.

With a diverse program of cabaret, theatre, burlesque and comedy, audiences are bound to find something that piques their interest. Given the strong and early uptake on tickets, bookings are highly recommended.
