Scene News: Sassy: Mama Alto Sings Sarah Vaughan

Return season of the critically acclaimed Melbourne Fringe 2014 cabaret, for the 2015 Stonnington Jazz Festival // Mama Alto took the 2014 Stonnington Jazz Festival by storm channeling another jazz icon, Billie Holiday.

Some called her Sassy, some the Divine One. Sarah Vaughan was one of the finest jazz singers of all time. At the Melbourne Fringe Festival 2014, Mama Alto presented a critically acclaimed tribute to the sumptuous, rich and phenomenal singer Sarah Vaughan. The Divine One’s lush vocal splendour, combined with poignantly nuanced interpretations, transformed songs into a rich tapestry of human experience. Her life story of ugly duckling transformed into beautiful swan is one that is utterly relatable: here we had a formidably talented and extremely glamorous woman who nursed deep insecurities and vulnerabilities. It was only through her songs that she found solace. It is these timeless songs and this extraordinary life story which Mama Alto shares with you in a special return season of SASSY as part of the Stonnington Jazz Festival.
