Sampa The Great will be taking the stage at the Corner Hotel for her very first headline show at the Melbourne live music stalwart to celebrate taking home the inaugural Corner Award 2016.
The rise of Sampa Tembo has been swift and strong. It has been a little under a year since the Zambian born musician released her debut mix-tape and made a spectacular impression on tastemakers and punters alike.
Separating Sampa from her peers is the upbringing and life experiences that inform her lyrics. Like her many influences – both musical and political – Sampa hopes to inform and inspire, delivering her message in a way that is bold yet inclusive. “I’m great,” she proclaims not as a boast but instead a rallying call, “You’re great. We’re great.”
In the few short months since The Great Mix-tape was released, Sampa dropped two un-announced tracks; ‘Blue Boss’ which hit #1 on Hype Machine, was picked up on BBC Radio 1 and reached 1 Million Spotify plays in 2 months and ‘Black Dignity’ which was added very quickly to triple j rotation. She has won over fans worldwide through her own remarkable lyrics as well as collaborations with Urthboy, Okenyo and Remi. Sampa was chosen to support Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat, Hiatus Kaiyote, Ibeyi, Little Simz and Fat Freddy’s Drop as well we her own sold out headline shows and festival slots at Golden Plains, Sugar Mountain, WOMAD and VIVID Live.
Her position as one of our countries hottest hip-hop talents was then solidified this year when she took the stage at Splendour In The Grass “With a huge grin on her face and the sass to match” (The AU Review). Sampa The Great can now add The Corner Award to her already impressive list of accolades.
Melbourne locals, Gold Class made such an impression on the selection panel that they will be the recipients of the special mention award; an Artist In Residence month at Bakehouse Studios. Relative newcomers, Gold Class play with savagery, subtlety and melody; characterised by attacking rhythms, bristling Aus-garage guitar lines mixed with a lo-fi jangle and the deep vibrato of singer Adam Curley. These Melbourne rockers have received critical acclaim through Australia and Europe, as well as wowing tastemakers at SXSW with their performance at this year’s showcase. You can check out the clip for their latest single “Kids On Fire” here!
The Corner Hotel are so pleased with the reaction from artists, industry and punters for the first award and say this is the first of many Corner Awards to come.
