Rachel Maria Cox launch their I Just Have A Lot Of Feelings EP this July.
The EP will be released on Sad Grrrls Club records on Thursday July 28th, with Cox embarking on an 8-date tour to promote the launch. Accompanying them on the NSW dates will be label-mate Antonia Susan, a Blue Mountains based newcomer whose debut album was released by the label at the start of June. The tour will also see Cox playing with the likes of Raave Tapes’ Joab Eastley, HANNAHBAND, Jess Locke, June Jonesof Two Steps On The Water, Bec Stevens and The Girl Fridas.
The EP itself explores Cox’s struggles in the last year with mental illness, specifically Borderline Personality Disorder, Social Anxiety and Anorexia and Bulimia, which Cox was hospitalised for at the end of last year. In a statement on their Facebook page last year, Cox came clean about their eating disorder and admitted “I know I need to stop so that I can get on with my life, but I simply can’t”. The track Weighty was written during their inpatient treatment, and Zips, Netflix and Dinner For Six deals with the aftermath of treatment. “After treatment I got stuck in a really bad period of not wanting to leave the house, not wanting people to see me after I gained some weight back” Cox explains, “so I just stayed in and binge watched true crime documentaries and awful romantic comedies, and my bulimia got worse rather than better”.
It’s otherwise been a massive year and a half for Cox. Since the release of their debut EP, Home, in February of last year, they founded Sad Grrrls Club and co-ordinated and performed at all 11 dates of Sad Grrrls Tour 2015. They’ve played alongside acts like Georgia Maq (Camp Cope), Jess Locke, Jay Whalley (Frenzal Rhomb), Jamie Hay, Lincoln Le Fevre, Jen Buxton, Lucy Wilson (The Sugarcanes), and Clea, among others.
I Just Have A Lot Of Feelings was recorded at Sawtooth Studios in Newcastle by Oliver Young, with additional recording being done by Rachel Maria Cox in their garage. Cox plays synth bass on the record, with Jack Lundie (Solo performer and Adeline Pines guitarist) playing rhythm guitar, Brayden “Boots” Porter on lead guitar and Oliver Young (Nailhouse) on drums. The EP will be available for digital download from sadgrrrlsclub.bandcamp.com on Thursday July 28th with a limited run of cassettes also available.
