Scene News: Pink Matter release debut EP ‘Human Error’

“Pink Matter have shown they’re ones to watch this year, so keep both eyes locked as they
head straight for the top.
– Emma Jones, Purple Sneakers

If there was a door at the back of your head, Pink Matter are the soundtrack to you walking through it; seeing yourself look at the world. That door is now wide open. Having just been announced as support to Unknown Mortal Orchestra in Brisbane, the quartet today release their highly anticipated debut EP ‘Human Error’.

Premiering on Wednesday exclusively via Pilerats, Human Error is a sonic heaven in a room full of mirrors, enticing the acceptance of imperfection. A snapshot of where the 4-piece are currently, the EP was recorded and mastered Jack Mckenzie and Brock Weston of Bedlam Records, and mixed by Nick Herrera (Hiatus Kaiyote, Jaala).

The complex and raw composition of the release mimic unfiltered moods that highly polished soul/jazz often gloss over; each instrument acting as a character in a plot where resolution and closure are luxuries. Pink Matter paint impressionistic images of everyday scenarios with you, the listener, removed from it. Human Error does not invoke an existential crisis, but rather provides grounding for existential fulfilment.

The 5-tracks traverse settings of being a little too tippled, mildly losing your grip on reality (Dope), midweek realisations of monotony (Giant), odes to the one that got away (Cleo), dissociating during confrontations (Judgement), and writing a salted caramel flavoured love letter to yourself (How Do I).

Inspired by synesthesia, the band listened through the EP with their eyes closed and envisioned the colours each track inspired. The artwork is composed of hues of deep reds, marigold yellow, baby blues and beige with black lines obstructing the palette, to symbolise the jagged instrumentation.
The EPs first single ‘Cleo’, has received strong community radio support and is currently sitting at #8 on the AMRAP Metro Charts and reached #6 on 4ZZZ’s most played. The sultry tune was added to rotation on triple j Unearthed radio, included on Home and Hosed Spotify playlist; and its video added to the rage playlist last week.

Formed in late 2016 the all female group have swiftly garnered praise winning the QUBE Effect’s ‘People Choice Award’ and receiving airplay on Triple J and 4ZZZ for their debut single ‘Quicksand‘. The four-piece have also performed at Jungle Love Festival and the Mountain Goat Valley Crawl, and played with the likes of Bugs & The Creases. Having just been announced for BIGSOUND 2018, A Love Supreme’s Block Party with Theo Parrish (USA) & Marcellus Pittman (USA) and as main support to Unknown Mortal Orchestra & The Bamboos, Pink Matter’s impressionistic take on neo-soul is sure to make waves.
