Ashley Naylor in concert for a whole week at The Yarra Hotel, Abbotsford
Ashley John Naylor is known to most as the amazingly talented guitarist and singer songwriter of a musical group called Even, but it has become apparent over the last decade or so that he has many irons in many fires, all of which burn rather brightly.
Ash currently wields the axe for the likes of Paul Kelly and Dan Sultan, has been doing so in The Ronson Hangup and Manta for sometime, was a member of JJJ darlings Rail in the early-mid nineties, does the rounds with the RocKwiz Orchestra when the show tours our big brown land, has done theatre shows with the likes of Tex Perkins and Clare Bowditch, has thoroughly enjoyed the role of Jimmy Page in quite a few Led Zeppelin theme nights in recent years, was musical director of the Triple J Paul Kelly tribute nights at the Forum for which he won an ARIA award for the soundtrack, and that’s just to mention a few. Ash is also putting the finishing touches on Even album number seven as we speak.
A few words from the great man himself;
“Unaccustomed as I am to overt displays of self-aggrandisement, Clanger at the Yarra Hotel light heartedly proposed one night I should play a week of shows at the venue. After a couple of beer-fuelled chuckles I replied with the age old response….”ok”. I have been fortunate enough to play at the Yarra Hotel in a few guises. To perform a week of shows in many of the acts I perform with seemed like an idea to good to ignore. So here we are, 2015. I think of Farnham at Rod Laver, Dire Straits at Melbourne Park, Christ….even Celine Dion at Vegas….my residency at the Yarra may enter this pantheon if I play me cards right! The venue’s publican, Mick Thomas reckons I might even get my own room to sleep in upstairs…”
The week commences Monday March 9 with Ash‘s Nuggetsesque appreciation outfit The Marshmallow Overcoat where he shares the stage with likeminded souls Davey Lane and Brett Wolfenden. Tuesday 10 it’s The Underlings with fellow Melbourne music legends Bruce Haymes, Peter Luscombe and Steve Hadley. Wednesday 11 Ash and Steve Pinkerton from the Ronson Hangup/The Anyones do a bunch of their favourite 60’s & 70’s covers together under the guise Nayls & Pinko. Thursday 12 it’s The Grapes time with Sherry Rich, Friday 13 and Saturday 14 it’s Even‘s turn to turn it on and the week ends with one of the tastiest line ups of the week, Ash and friends Barb Waters, Phil Kakulas, Bruce Haymes and Paul Thomas play at the tour after party to end all parties on the Sunday afternoon.
You’ve gotta be in it to win it. Tickets for The Grapes and Even shows are available thru trybooking.com and all the other shows are free entry. Come and celebrate.
