Baby Blue are conquering left, right and center. The Melbourne four-piece sped to the frontline of the local indie scene with back-to-back hits on their first EP In My Mind last year and have been leading the way ever since. Charging forward, the group is excited to today reveal their highly anticipated yet barely awaited sophomore EP Do What You Like as well as a six-date interstate tour to celebrate, plus – to round out the trifecta – a brand spanking new video for their latest earworm ‘I Like You’.
Merely a year and one month on from their debut to the day, Do What You Like seesBaby Blue at their finest; complete with the usual suspects of ‘60s jangle and punchy one-liners. A testament to the prolific artistry of lead singer, guitarist, songwriter and photographer Rhea Caldwell, Do What You Like is a sonic journey that takes Caldwell’s unabashed storytelling along with the tight musicianship of her band and blasts it out of the creative stratosphere. Recorded and mixed by Paul Maybury and mastered by Adam Dempsey, the excellent sophomore EP solidifies Baby Blue’s place among the many great local outfits of today and is a flagship for Caldwell’s progress both as an artist and human. Lead singles ‘Fire And Ice’ and ‘I Like You‘ each demonstrate Baby Blue’s broad stylistic scope, shifting seamlessly from pure psychedelia to hazy surf garage and everything in between with captivating conviction. [pullquote]“Endlessly listenable” – James Frostick, Weirdo Wasteland[/pullquote] With the latter single comes an air of dreamy nonchalance, depicted ever-so-coolly in the new music video also out today. Shot on Super 8 film by Sean Barnes at popular Melbourne music dwelling The Tote, the clip takes inspiration from the opening scene of Three Times, a film by Hou Hsiao-Hsien and a fun dance scene from Bande à Part by French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard in a beautifully saturated, noise-ridden classic.
Featuring an evolving lineup of Dave Mudie (Courtney Barnett, L.A. Mood, Gumboot),Nathanael Riley (19th Century Strongmen, Captain Apples), Cordelia Crosby (Gena Rose Bruce), Andrew Campbell (Jim Lawrie, Lipsync Chicks), Perrin Date (New Band),Liam ‘Snowy’ Halliwell (Jade Imagine, No Local, The Ocean Party), Jesse Williams(Girlatones, Leah Senior) and Josh Coleman (Gumboot); the band have established themselves as a live force to be reckoned with. [pullquote]“60s surf rock pushed through the modern gaze of quirky pop-star.” – Dave McCarthy, Laundry Echo [/pullquote]Gigging relentlessly around town in their short time together, Baby Blue has performed alongside an impressive list of both local and international artists such as Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Benjamin Booker, Husky, The Ocean Party, The Courtney’s, Chastity Belt, Leah Senior and more. [pullquote]“Rhea’s got a bottomless bag of hits” – Dave Ruby Howe, triple j[/pullquote] Backed by such high calibre and in-demand musicians, the band’s contribution allows Caldwell’s songs to truly shine on the stage, transforming the outfit into a powerful and compelling live act. Be sure to catch Baby Blue when they launch Do What You Like with a run of intimate live performances around the country this July.
