Scene News: Join the VIP Party this Wednesday to welcome newest Melbourne venue, The Hummingbird, in St Kilda.

Did you know that a hummingbird’s heart is relatively the largest of all animals, at 2.5% of its body weight?

Heart and soul has gone into planning this new St Kilda entertainment venue – aptly dubbed “The Hummingbird.”  Venue operator Heather Para worked in collaboration with the Newmarket Hotel to design a warm and inviting space, located just down the stairs, inside Newmarket, 34 Inkerman St, St Kilda. It features an excellent new stage and sound system, a friendly atmosphere and intimate attention to all the details. Great food, entertainment and creature comforts for the patrons are prioritized with outstanding facilities for the artists to play and present a huge variety of music styles.

“I’ve had my eye on this room for some time and am so lucky to be able to collaborate with a venue that already had a fantastic reputation for food and hospitality.  It’s the perfect space to present the best Australian and International touring artists of many genres. From Jazz to Heritage acts, Soul Funk, Reggae,  RnB, Comedy and everything else in between. We are putting in an excellent sound system, remodeling the existing stage and working closely with the chef to present a sophisticated food offering.  We really will be providing something for everyone,” said Heather.

An intimate nocturnal hideaway, The Hummingbird will host shows many nights per week with two shows per night on Fridays and Saturdays – an early dinner show from 6pm – 10pm followed by a second more danceable show for the late night crowd from 10 pm until late.

THE HUMMINGBIRD OPENS WITH VIP PARTY IN ST KILDA this WEDNESDAY, 2 MAY

St Kilda local Bev Killick is our opening night MC. Bev is from the bold and brassy school of stand up – much to the delight of her devoted audiences. She has performed for more that 250,000 souls here, there and everywhere in her travels and has had the grand pleasure of working with Weird Al Yankovic, Gina Riley and Jane Turner (with the production of Kath and Kim) and many others She also has numerous film credits to her name and a reputation for her non-stop energy. She’s loveable, bawdy and a little bit naughty and will be delivering her trademark hilarious observations and tales of mayhem at our opening night.

Our feature artist Alma Zygier has been fascinated by the pre-war era of Jazz; the singers, Ella Fitzgerald, Bessie Smith, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Memphis Minnie and the Broadway composers who provided the repertoire, Gershwin, Kern, Porter, Rodgers. Born with a golden musical pedigree (daughter of WillyZygier and Deborah Conway), she brings her superb vocal talent and an emotional maturity to her performance that belies her years. She will be performing with her band of hot young players, bringing her American Songbook repertoire into the 21st century.

Melbourne-based DJ, event curator and ‘Boogie Beat Suite’ PBS radio presenter, MzRizk, will keep the party going til late, spinning all the platters that matter. One of Melbourne’s busiest and best-loved DJs, MzRizk has supported Australian acts such as Remi and Hiatus Kaiyote; as well as international artists Badbadnotgood, Mos Def, Public Enemy, Jill Scott, Snarky Puppy, The Daptones, John Morales, Bilal, Cody Chestnut, Maseo (De La Soul), Common, Talib Kweli, Jurassic 5, Maxwell and many more.
