VIDEO: ‘Without A Blush’ by Hatchie
Hatchie says, “I’m excited to start the next chapter of Hatchie with ‘Without A Blush’, the first single from my album Keepsake. It’s the perfect introduction to the feelings and sounds on the rest of the record, which I can’t wait to finally start sharing on tour!”
On lead single ‘Without a Blush’, jagged guitar riffs and woozy rhythms meet in a sprawling piece of industrial-pop, with Hatchie’s gorgeous airy vocal channelling loss and longing, regret and self-doubt. Elsewhere on Keepsake, Hatchie brings an unlikely transcendence to the tenderest of moments. Throughout the album, Hatchie’s kaleidoscopic sonic palette draws out distinct moods and tones, continually revealing her depth and imagination as a musician and songwriter.
Hatchie’s exceptional debut EP, 2018’s Sugar & Spice – which yielded the singles ‘Sugar & Spice’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEUOoOXJBNs) , ‘Try’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiZ8NECETHc) , ‘Sure’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uITI4DkVRL8) , ‘Bad Guy’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oY7IbdrtDuA) and ‘Sleep’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icad1HjrmXs) – delivered the sonic equivalent of falling deliriously in love: a sustained rush of feeling, rendered in swoony melodies, gauzy guitar tones and endlessly hypnotic layers of sound. Sugar & Spice garnered widespread acclaim from international music media, including NME, Stereogum, The Line of Best Fit, Popjustice, Wonderland, The Guardian UK, triple j, FBi, Spotify, Apple Music, Purple Sneakers, VICE, TheMusic and more, with Pitchfork dubbing Hatchie the “dream-pop idol of tomorrow”.
* ‘There is an ease to her music; the three singles she’s released so far waft like a balmy breeze.’ – Pitchfork
* ‘Her particular brand of pop music is a rhythmic, lifting and 90s-embracing nod to carefree, happier days’ – The 405
* ‘Hatchie swoops into earshot… a marvellous mesh of Cocteau Twins-y atmospherics & jangly 90’s pop’ – The Line of Best Fit
* ‘Inject a bit of Hatchie’s cavernous-feeling millennium pop into your veins and it could probably power you through an entire night; get a taste of ‘Sleep’ for example, and you probably won’t be getting any.’ – Fader
Hatchie experiments with countless new textures on Keepsake, exploring everything from industrial to new wave to dance-pop, handling each with understated elegance and pure, powerful feeling. Teaming up once again with Sugar & Spice producer John Castle (Cub Sport, Vance Joy, Jack River) Keepsake was recorded in his studio in Melbourne’s north.
There’s a self-possessed spirit infusing all of Keepsake, which ultimately serves as a document of a particularly kinetic moment in Hatchie’s life. “I’m not much of a nostalgic person when it comes to memories, but I do have a tendency to hold on to certain things, like tickets from the first time I went someplace on holiday,” Hatchie says, reflecting on the album’s title.
“It made sense to me to call the record that, at a time when I’m going to probably end up with a lot of keepsakes – and in a way, this whole album is almost like a keepsake in itself.”
Ahead of her headline Australian tour this May, Hatchie will support Beach House, Death Cab for Cutie and Kylie Minogue in Australia and Girlpool in the US. Hatchie’s headline Australian shows will be her first since her sold-out 2018 Sugar & Spice EP tour.
