HERE WE GO AGAIN – DAN BRODIE

Discover the art of the do-si-do as Dan Brodie unveils his latest single and accompanying found footage music video, ‘Here We Go Again’.

Brodie crafted the new music video using footage originally filmed by Joan Lockhart Bennett as part of her master’s degree project for Illinois State University. The footage, extracted from a 1969 instructional film titled the Square Dance History Project, offers a glimpse into the wholesome world of square dancing from a seemingly more innocent era of US history.

Seeking a contrast to the darkly humorous essence of the song, Brodie was drawn to the clean-cut imagery of the Square dancers. However, beneath the surface of their seemingly cheerful movements lies an unsettling layer of ambiguity, reminiscent of the surreal unease found in the works of David Lynch.

The instructional film covers a wide array of Square Dance techniques, from formations to intricate steps like the do-si-do and Figure 8. Amidst the dancers and callers—all college students—paired with Brodie’s melodic narrative, it becomes challenging to discern who is willingly engaged and who is lost in their own unsettling reverie.

‘Here We Go Again‘, the fourth single from Brodie’s album ‘The Ballad of Cowboy Dan’, encapsulates a blend of humor, melancholy, and irresistible charm, serving as a bittersweet ode to life’s unpredictable journey.
