Having attended a few previous Melbourne guitar shows at Caulfield Race Track I had something to compare this year’s event to.
The first thing I noticed was, arriving on the hour, the fifteen minutes of silence.
This is such a great idea. What happens is that on the hour for 15 minutes there is no playing of instruments or demonstrations in the exhibitor section. For the remainder of the hour the sound can get quite hectic.
Another observation was that in watching the guest artists demonstrate and perform was that the acoustic guitar sounds are improving while the electric guitar sounds are questionable.
A couple of the first acts on the Marsh Mezzanine stage, Anna Scionti and Minnie Marks, had great slide guitar tones, a pleasure to listen to.
I had to leave the show early as I had a gig to play myself. When we started our set that evening I had a close listen to the sound coming from my amp and compared it to the electric guitar sounds I heard at the show (I didn’t hear everyone) but my trusty old Fender Stratocaster plugged into a 60s Vox AC30 was hard to beat.
