Q&A Scene: Dr Gonzo

Sex, Drugs, Rock’N’Roll Pop-Up Shop Sale

Tell us about your sale?

I’m the original owner of PolyEster Books and records selling items from my personal collection and I’ve been joined by Bruce Milne from the legendary Augogo records who has contributed many truly remarkable items of memorabilia for sale.

How would you describe your store in food form and why?

A Beggers Banquet, a plethora of Exotic trifles for freaks with only a little bit of cash.

Which of your books resonate most strongly and why?

There are so many weird and strange books which makes it a difficult question, however for some unrecognized reason books with Mondo in the title resonate quite strongly. Did you know that the word Mondo means ‘something striking and remarkable’? The books include titles such as Mondo Lucha A Go Home, Mondo Music, Mondo James Dean and Mondo Brunswick St.

Tell us a quick anecdote about your time as a book store owner?

In the mid nineties I had a little music festival in front of the shop with bands like the Wet Ones, I Spit On Your Gravy and Painters and Dockers playing. Paul Stewart, Painters and Dockers singer would jump on passing Trams singing while riding the tram and running back down Brunswick St.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Underground films such as John Waters Female Trouble, pink flamingos and Polyester.

Psychedelic music and punk rock.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

Yesterday by the Beatles, then I could  afford to become a  philanthropist and solve a few of the world’s problems.

What’s next for you?

I might become an alcoholic and write a best selling novel.

What’s your scene?

I’ve always enjoyed that toe-tapping Hoodoo Gurus tune.
