Scene News: SUGAR MOUNTAIN | FunkinEven and Nick Monaco added to lineup | London’s Boiler Room TV returns

With just over two weeks to go before names like Nas, Kim Gordon, Ariel Pink, SWANS, Leif Podhajsky, Hisham Bharoocha and more head to Melbourne, the countdown to Sugar Mountain 2015 music and art festival is on! And our line-up has just gotten bigger – with three exciting new additions to reveal.

First up: Boiler Room TV. The biggest underground music show on the planet will return to Sugar Mountain in 2015, curating its own stage at the festival and hosting DJ performances from international heavyweights and the true local underground, broadcast live via the internet. Sugar Mountain 2013 was Boiler Room’s first ever foray into the Australian market, and we’re very excited to join forces with them again. Evolving from the UK’s rich pirate radio heritage, it has grown from a webcam taped on a warehouse wall to become THE definitive showcase of new music worldwide. In just four years, Boiler Room has weaved itself into the fabric of dance music culture, boasting an envious back catalogue of era-defining sets from the likes of Jamie XX, Thom Yorke, Nicolas Jaar, Disclosure, SBTRKT and ?uestlove. The Sugar Mountain show will feature live sets from Soul Clap, FunkinEven, Wax’o Paradiso and Noise In My Head, along with Melbourne-based visual artist and floral stylist Poppy Lane addressing the outdoor environment within the VCA grounds.

Also headed down under to Australia for Sugar Mountain 2015 is prestigious London producer Steve Tony Julien, aka FunkinEven. Inspired by his teenage musical diet of hip-hop, early hardcore and drum’n’bass – and after being raised by a family who spun albums at home by the likes of Prince, The Neptunes, Kraftwerk and George Clinton – back in 2009 Steve introduced his unique sound via the release of his debut EP, KLEER (Eglo Records). That was quickly followed up by 2010 tracks ‘She’s Acid’ and ‘Heart Pound’, the success of which led to collaborations with names like Bonobo and Roisin Murphy. At the end of 2011, he went super analogue on the sequence friendly ‘Rowland’s Jam’, a song issued by his very own imprint – Apron Records. With back-to-back tour dates lined-up, a monthly residence at NTS radio, and his second trip to Oz happening… FunkinEven is a busy man! We can’t wait to hear him live in person at Sugar Mountain.

Also joining the action at Sugar Mountain in January 2015 is irrepressible San Francisco producer/DJ Nick Monaco. Nick’s captivating 2014 debut album, Mating Call, and his infectious live show includes a colourful cast of characters: from the innocent ‘Butterfly’, the creepy vibes of ‘The Stalker’, or the ultra helpful ‘Maintenance Man’. You never know who’ll be emerging out of Monaco’s dressing room – and that’s what makes his show so riveting. The androgynous, deep house club king has started his own line of lipstick called ‘Freak Flag’ and flourishes in the organic roots of the dance scene. “The [LGBT] community nurtured modern dance music into existence,” Monaco says. “As dance music continues to be adopted by dominant pop culture, I think it’s important to remind ourselves about the origins of the sound.” Make sure you join in the party with Nick Monaco at Sugar Mountain next summer and Let Your Freak Flag Fly!

Finally: due to scheduling commitments Anthony Naples has unfortunately unable to make his 2015 Australian tour (including Sugar Mountain), and we regretfully announce his cancellation.

Featuring some of modern music’s most iconic names plus a slew of visual art groundbreakers, Sugar Mountain 2015 promises to be the most visceral, extraordinary experience of the Aussie summer.
