This kind of effortless, vintage authenticity, can only really be achieved by someone who has well and truly mastered their craft”.

L.A. Mood announces his new EP Breakfast At Sassy’s, which will be released May 10th.
First track off the rank is the woozy, sun-ravaged jam “Highway Fidelity”, premiered by Deafen County. Co-written with Ambrose Kenny-Smith (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard/The Murlocs), this is a real road-dog’s anthem. It’s a conversation shared between lots of touring musos… They know how lucky they are, but it’s a strange reality: ground-hog day on tour, and coming home and trying to slot into normal life. Then also needing to look ahead at a future that might not remember the band. Kenny-Smith nails it with some concise lines:
Never thought past thirty…
L.A. Mood is the solo project of Dave Mudie, Courtney Barnett’s full-time drummer. He says he was experimenting in “Highway Fidelity” with trying to write a soul jam à la James Brown and The Spinners, but with some washed out blues. It features Kenny-Smith on harmonica and Paul Dillon (Sparklehorse, Mercury Rev) on guitars. As per 2017’s debut EP Crushing Highs & Amazing Lows, it was engineered by Collin Hegna of the Brian Jonestown Massacre in Portland.
Mudie and I made a scrappy video for the track in the back-streets of Carlton North-cum-Los Angeles.
The EP artwork is by Austin, TX artist Mary Streepy. When you pre-order you can also grab a Courtney Barnett-designed T-Shirt.
L.A. Mood will play his first full-band show ever at Merri Creek Tavern on Friday May 10th.
NICE WORDS FOR L.A. MOOD
“Each track on the EP transports the listener to the sun-soaked streets of California”
“Love the muddy warmth of this song (Virgin Song)… The kind of chorus you wanna hear while driving with the ute windows down and the wind in your hair.”
“Two Hearts is such a pop banger”
“SHHH. I’m hiding down the back taking this ride again.”
“This has got that same sort of comfort like when you slip on your favourite winter boots and they’re still comfy as.”
“Charging power-pop, waltzing country and hazy slacker rock, all joined an unshakeably accomplished feel that belies the fact it’s his début release as a solo songwriter”
“With irony-laden tack piano tinkling away above waltzing guitar chords, Mudie’s louchely chanted vocal evokes drunken saloon singalongs and long periods of self reflection. Enjoy.”
