AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan announced today in Sydney that The Killers (http://thekillersmusic.com/) will perform in the Virgin Australia Pre-Game Show and Virgin Australia Premiership Party on the 2017 Toyota AFL Grand Final Day.

Mr McLachlan said the league was pleased one of the world’s most popular rock bands will take to the MCG stage for the Virgin Australia Pre-Game Show.

“I’m so pleased that The Killers have agreed to play on that one day in September as fans of all ages enjoy their music,” Mr McLachlan said.

“The Killers will bring their music to the Virgin Australia Pre-Game Show, but more importantly to the Virgin Australia Premiership Party, a free concert post the match, where all fans can join in and celebrate this year’s Premiers,” he said.

Fans without a ticket to the Toyota AFL Grand Final can gain free entry to the MCG to enjoy The Killers set from 6pm.

The Killers first burst onto the music scene in 2004, with a debut album, Hot Fuss, that topped the charts and went Double Platinum in Australia, spawning huge global hit singles ‘Mr Brightside’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGdGFtwCNBE) and ‘Somebody Told Me’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5fBdpreJiU) .

The Killers’ new album, Wonderful Wonderful, is the Las Vegas band’s first since Battle Born in 2012, and the Virgin Australia Pre-Game Show will be the first chance for Australian fans to see songs from the new album live.

Wonderful Wonderful was recorded with the producer Jacknife Lee at studios in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, and will be released on September 22.

The album is the band’s most sonically forward thinking record yet; an LP bursting with all of the blazing choruses and arena-filling anthems that make The Killers one of the world’s biggest and most beloved rock bands.

The Killers said, “People of the great country of Australia – let us inject our American rock and roll tunes into your sporting event, please! AFL here we come.”

Virgin Australia Chief Marketing Officer Inese Kingsmill said: “We are thrilled to support the Grand Final entertainment as the official airline of the AFL.

“The Killers are part of the Virgin family, signed to Virgin EMI Records, so it’s fitting and exciting to have them perform at the Virgin Australia Pre-Game Show and Virgin Australia Premiership Party where fans can take to the MCG turf to celebrate with the 2017 Premiers.

“The AFL Grand Final is the biggest sporting event in Australia and we’re passionate about providing a great experience for fans, including those flying in for the match,”
Ms Kingsmill said.

Half-time of the 2017 Toyota AFL Grand Final will be devoted to the twenty-two 2017 NAB AFL Auskickers of the Year nominees who will test out their AFL skills on the biggest stage of the year, along with the running of the Grand Final Sprint.

This year’s Toyota AFL Grand Final will once again see an array of activities throughout the day involving various members of the Australian Football community, the farewell to retiring players along with a host of other football identities. The Footy Festival will run from the Wednesday of Toyota AFL Grand Final Week until Grand Final Day in Yarra Park outside the MCG’s Gate 3.
