Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?
Our new EP ‘This is not a desert Island’ features the singles ‘Bedroom’ and ‘Summertime’ it’s a collection of sings that we’re written recently and the underlying themes are state of mind, growing up and getting through depression and anxiety. Having said that it’s got some super folky pop vibes, so isn’t a total downer! We take it on tour next month.
What’s your favourite work at this point in time?
My favourite thing we’ve done right now is this EP, as the songs are all really representative of where my heads at currently. I always enjoy performing our latest work most as it feels really honest and straight from the heart. Sometimes if a great deal of time passes since writing a song, my connection to it starts to detach as I forget the person I was when I wrote it. Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.Whenever we tour we always live out of a van so there are plenty of crazy anecdotes, many of them involving toilets… or lack of them. Last tour Thea fell off the bed and got stuck under the table in the van. when she tried to climb out she accidentally pulled all the luggage on top of her and then the table collapsed. I have never laughed so hard in my life.
What, or who, inspires you?
So many things inspire me! brave people, kind people, strong women, people working together, the sun, the ocean, my partner, my friends, my family.
Which song do you wish you wrote?
Sunday Morning by Ani DiFranco
How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
Tequila. It’s surprising, packs a punch and makes you feel like a trashy goddess.
What’s next for you?
Tour is the next big thing on the horizon, then towards the end of the year we start working on our first full length album, and some festival mayhem over the summer!
What’s your scene?
My home in Freo. I’m pretty reclusive and don’t really leave the house unless I have too. If I wasn’t in a band I’d never leave Freo at all. I write everything in the safety and solitude of home.
About The Tommyhawks
Exploding with quirky, dramatic, trippy and heartfelt songs, This Is Not A Desert Island is the third EP from the Perth group. Set for release on Friday the 8th of September the EP explores the idea of trying to control one’s own state of mind and mental health… and often failing. Focusing on trying to grow up and figure out who we are and who we want to be. While the second single from the EP, ’Summertime’ is about the process of coming out of a dark place and finding peace within.
Since forming 3 years ago, The Tommyhawks have played over 20 festivals across the country, been nominated for the West Australian Music ‘Song of The Year’ award (2016) and are soon to have their track ‘New Friends’ featured in the new Ben Elton feature film Three Summers. Spending much of the last few years touring Australia in a beaten up little transit van they have earnt themselves a reputation for a mesmerising and cockle-warming live performance.
The Tommyhawks are preparing to take This Is Not A Desert Island around the country in September. Be prepared to come away with a full heart and a big crush.
