Q&A Scene: Owen Mancell, Andy Thor, Tim Cramer – The Hollerin Sluggers

Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?

Our first single is Going up the River a swampy country shuffle overlayed with gritty harmonica inspired by Andy’s love of fishing, the track produces imagery of the swamp and the Blues favourite fish “the Catfish”. The simple things in life are always the best, going fishing and taking your catch home to the Mrs and hopefully reaping the rewards.

What’s your favourite work at this point in time?

Owen’s favourite track is Shut Up n Dance

Andy‘s favourite track is Writings on the Wall for the groove and also Shut Up n Dance is a stand out. Well really all of them.

Tim’s favourite track is Shut Up n Dance

How would you describe your sound in food form and why? A Cocktail of selected Rock spirits shaken but not stirred with a dash of blues, we call it a tricky dickey screw driver.

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.

There is a subliminal snoring track in one of our songs on the album recorded live on the couch in Damien Gerard’s Studio studio. If you play it backwards it still sounds like snoring.

What, or who, inspires you?

Owen – The Backsliders, and all the old blues masters like Robert Johnson, Son House and Muddy Waters

Andy- Chasing the ultimate gig, the challenge of writing music then recording it and most of all playing my drums to an audience.

Tim – Nikola Tesla

Which song do you wish you wrote?

Owen’s pick – Any song off the Cruel Sea’s Honeymoon Is Over album.

Andy’s pick – Candle in the wind (1997) – All Time bestselling single

Tim’s’ Pick- Wedding Cake Island – Midnight Oil

What’s next for you?

At the moment we are focused on playing this album to as many people as possible, after that when the creative juices start flowing again, and we have time, we will focus on the next bunch of songs. Hopefully grabbing the attention of some festival bookers and other bands who would want to play with us.

What’s your scene?

Our scene at the moment is doing and hitting venues up for gigs, filming videos, writing media info, rehearsing, working day jobs to make ends meet, and trying to have a laugh in between. We are really committed to bringing a good fun show to the table. Having been fortunate already to meet and play with some fantastic Aussie band our scene is to continue the quest and contribute to the live scene.

Rocking, Amazing, Electrifying, dynamic and leaving you wanting more, best describes a Hollerin Sluggers performance. Hailing from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, a traditional hotbed of rock n roll, the Sluggers are a refreshingly new generation of Aussie rock and blues acts. . This trio joins the resurgence of bands that identify with and gives a huge nod to their forebears. The Aussie pub scene was a suburban ritual for the working man, for a moment in time where bands, influenced by the blues men of the Deep South, moulded the blues baby rock n roll into an edgy dirty swagger of irresistible rebellion that detached itself from society. The sluggers combined experience of Owen Mancell on guitars/vocals , Tim Cramer on Bass/Vocals and Andy Thor on drums/harmonica shine through to deliver a foot stomping and hip shaking heart pumping show that captures the crowds attention. On debut in March 2016 “The Promised Land” entered the AMRAP and Australian Blues n Roots Radio Airplay Charts. Their new album “Gypsy Mojo” is due for release in February 2017 and has already met with promising reviews.
